Villa Callela: Wooden House

In the early 2000s, Heli started looking for a plot of land to build her own mökki, finding the ideal location on an island in southern Finland. A few years later, Villa Callela was born.

The Finnish mökki is a wooden villa made of laminated timber logs where life is lived simply and to relax. One can find such retreat in the woods, on lakesides or by the sea: that’s where Heli spent her holidays throughout her childhood years, moving away from city life.

Built in connection to its surroundings, with an outdoor wooden decking facing south and an open fireplace in natural stone, glass and metal at the centre, the log cabin was designed as a retreat. It was the first time Heli brought together the five natural elements in a project.

The essence of the wooden house is that of a sanctuary, a haven to escape from hectic rhythms – a way to experience the breath of the Finnish landscape and become one with nature and the universe again.
